Football & Fiction

Last Fall, a couple of friends and I started reading selections from the Complete Short Stories collection by Flannery O’Connor. We decided to start meeting on Monday nights and worked our discussion of the stories we read around halftime and other breaks in NFL Monday Night Football on ESPN while nursing some fine beverages.

Yes, I think we were likely the only 3 guys in the world that were linking those 2 activities together at the same time. Certainly a little geeky (or a lot by my wife’s estimation) but also nice to know we had created something no one else had ever done…or may ever do in the future.

This year the group has doubled in size and we are reading select short stories. I plan to chronicle our readings here for your pleasure and amusement. We plan to meet every other week.

1. Rappaccini’s Daughter, Nathaniel Hawthorne: Sept 17 WAS 20 @ PHI 12.

2. The Birthmark, Nathaniel Hawthorne: Oct 1 NE 34 @ CIN 13.

3. A View of the Woods, Flannery O’Connor: Oct 29 GB 19 @ DEN 13.

4. King Lear, Act I, William Shakespeare: Dec 2 NE 27 @ BAL 24.

  1. I read half of “Wise Blood” by Flannery O’Connor but haven’t finished it yet. Are the short stories good?

What about Poe? His short stories are great.

You know I lead a book club at HPC so I think this is very cool. Yes, it’s geek to the max but cool.

  2. Carole,

Yes, the short stories are great. If you are looking for a light read to pick you up on a down day check out “A Good Man is Hard to Find.”
